Lateral Partner Move Checklist
As you consider a lateral move, you will need to prepare the following information so that we can discuss it when we meet. It will provide the basic data about your practice that I need to consult with you on the best law firm opportunities available.

  1. List (generic description, not by name) all your client types for whom you have billed legal work the past 3 years (these are only those clients who historically, or for good reason in the future will be sending their legal work to you). Indicate what % of your total practice originations for each year that these top 5 clients comprise. And you may also indicate, if significant, client matters for which you are the responsible attorney but would not be the “originating” attorney.
  2. Provide a 3 year track record of total client billings to the types of clients you described in (1).
  3. List all staff (partners, associates, paralegals or secretaries) who are currently integral to your work. These people (if any) without whom you would have strong reservations about making a lateral move.
  4. Which of your clients tend to have direct business conflicts with other clients (i.e., if you do insurance coverage work, policy-holder side, you will not be going to a firm that represents lending institutions or insurance companies. Are there any clients (how many) that you have originated whom you would never allow to be conflicted out in a move to a new law firm.
  5. List which practice areas, other that you own (such as employment counseling & litigation or general litigation), from which you regularly obtain legal work from the clients described in 1 above.
  6. List any other practice areas not already discussed which you would like your new firm to possess for purposes of better servicing your clients.
  7. What was your annual compensation last year and what do your project for this year?
  8. What is your minimum monthly draw requirement?
